Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to leverage your network of contacts in the nation's richest bio-pharm region and represent a company that delivers to high standards, based on values, integrity, and a near-obsession for superb project execution. Because we are a smaller company (but with global reach) you'll enjoy a family oriented culture in which creative ideas don't get bogged down in red tape. Being smaller also will mean a bigger challenge for you to open doors, but our commission plan is more generous than our mid and large sized competitors.

You'll focus primarily on developing new business in a 13-state territory in the northeastern US; this is our least developed region, meaning there is both low hanging fruit and plenty of long-term potential. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant sales and business development experience, including experience in and an understanding of the clinical development market. While a background selling contract research organization (CRO) services would be a plus, we are also open to the fresh insights brought by a professional from a different background. We're looking for an individual with a demonstrated ability to build strong client relationships.

As a full-service CRO, Paragon Biomedical brings innovation to market through impeccably managed clinical trials. We distinguish ourselves with a combination of project excellence, clinical and data expertise, and risk mitigation that keeps our clients sleeping soundly at night. From the beginning, Paragon has been dedicated to maintaining a corporate culture based on equal opportunity, diversity, and life balance.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree; an MBA is preferred.
  • Demonstrated presentation abilities.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, delegate, and follow through.
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to achieve goals independently.
  • A collaborative, teamwork oriented approach.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • DIA membership is a plus.
You also will need to be willing and able to travel overnight 50% of the time. You will work out of your home office, and depending on where you live, the travel could be less.

What's in It for You

Large, high potential territory -- this market includes many of the key players in the bio-pharm industry, and we've only begun to penetrate it. While our sweet spot is small to medium companies, you won't be limited by the size of potential clients. We're putting our money where our mouth is, too: with an emphasis on new business, we've created special incentives in that area.

A company you can believe in -- when you sell Paragon, you sell unparalleled quality and consistency, responsiveness, and innovation. We consider peerless quality, on-time delivery, and strict budgets to be the minimum standard. We are careful to back our words with an intensive, company-wide focus on safe, expertly managed trials.

Carefully cultivated business model -- through carefully considered and decentralized growth, Paragon has expanded from industry player to industry leader in key therapeutic areas that include cardiovascular, central nervous systems, infectious disease, and oncology. We are now strategically located and large enough to manage any clinical trial, yet still agile enough to offer leading-edge drug development, statistical analysis, and medical research services with a client-centric personal touch.

Great culture and people -- since our inception in 1989, we have established a unique culture and management style that gives our associates room to live, grow, and truly enjoy their work. Our values are integrity, teamwork, diversity, and life balance in a learning, rewarding and fun environment. Paragon shares all critical company information (including financial) through an Open Book Management system.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive base salary and generous commission plan, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect plus some pleasant surprises, such as flexible spending accounts, training and development programs, rewards and recognition programs, and more.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to the Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, you will assume ownership of one of four territories in the US; we also have two Sales Management associates for Business Development in Europe. Your territory will include Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine

We take a team approach and you will collaborate with Business Development staff to achieve your goals. In a nutshell, you will leverage client and industry information to analyze, assess, and develop effective and successful client relations to deliver new business and opportunities for expanding Paragon's services with existing accounts. Your challenge right off the bat won't be to find potential targets, but to narrow down the list.

You will invest the largest portion of your time in providing sales leadership in your area, with an emphasis on creating and maintaining positive and effective client relationships. This will include designing and delivering powerful capabilities and proposal defense mechanisms and creating opportunities through industry relationships and networks. You'll also take a proactive approach to resolving sponsor issues by creating specific action plans that support both Paragon and sponsor objectives, and establishing project review meetings on ongoing projects.

The balance of your activities will fall into four main areas:
  • Developing account strategies, including projecting annual sales forecasts, setting up an account contact schedule, and more.
  • Negotiating proposals in collaboration and coordination with Client Relations, Clinical Services, and other functional areas. In addition to identifying the most effective presentation team, you'll lead Paragon proposal defenses with clients. You also will negotiate LOIs, master agreements, and milestone payments with customers.
  • Acting as a Marketing representative, assisting in the development of marketing and promotional materials as well as industry meeting strategies. This will include obtaining competitive information, representing Paragon at industry conferences and therapeutic meetings, and communicating industry events and trends to management.
  • Reporting on your accounts, documenting your activities and achievements in CRM and M-Power software programs.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will combine a strong entrepreneurial drive with a consultative, partnering approach. You'll not only take full advantage of the tools and resources available to you, you also will be proactive about developing those tools and resources, such as building a robust contact database. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Director, Business Development, you will achieve your goals autonomously while keeping the VP in the loop.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!

Who We Are

Paragon Biomedical, Inc. was founded in 1989. The company's early successes resulted from a strategy still in effect today: Hire the best, most experienced staff in the industry, regardless of location, and provide a customized approach to the key aspects of clinical trial management, data management, and biostatistics.

Our full-service offerings, strategic global presence, and risk mitigation have been the driver behind our success, and the success of our clients, over the past two decades. We've continuously improved our processes and training. We've created an exceptional technology infrastructure and systems that perfectly complement our commitment to project excellence.

Over the years, Paragon has been recognized through numerous awards, such as founder Gena Reed's 2005 Remarkable Business Woman of the Year Award from the Orange County chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). In fact, women constitute the majority of our entire workforce, including the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) positions. In 2003, Paragon was certified by two organizations: NAWBO and the Women's Enterprise Business National Council (WEBNC) as a Woman-Owned Business. This designation has, in turn, benefited our sponsor's own diversity initiatives.
